About the specialty

Obstetrics & Gynaecology careers in the NHS

Obstetrics and gynaecology combines acute, high-stakes intrapartum care with elective surgery and long-term women's health — a broad, rewarding specialty with consistent NHS demand.

Training pathway

Training runs through the RCOG programme (ST1–ST7) with MRCOG examinations and Advanced Training Skills Modules (ATSMs) for sub-specialisation. CCT or CESR plus GMC Specialist Register entry is required for consultant posts.

Typical employers

O&G consultants and SAS doctors are employed across teaching hospitals and district general units with delivery suites. Demand is steady nationwide for both labour-ward and predominantly gynaecology job plans.

Grades we recruit

We recruit Consultant (CCT or CESR), Specialty Doctor (SAS) and Associate Specialist O&G doctors, and assist senior registrars near CCT. All posts are substantive and permanent.

Roles we recruit

O&G sub-specialties

Whether your practice leans obstetric, surgical or predominantly outpatient, we match you to the right unit and job plan.

Obstetrics & labour ward

Intrapartum care, high-risk obstetrics and maternal medicine — the acute core of most consultant job plans.

Benign gynaecology

Outpatient and surgical gynaecology, including ambulatory and minimal-access surgery. Strong demand for elective capacity.

Gynae-oncology

Sub-specialist cancer surgery and MDT roles in cancer-centre units, with dedicated consultant posts.

Reproductive medicine & fertility

Sub-specialty roles spanning NHS and partnered fertility services — a growing area of demand.

Why Ava Medical

Why O&G doctors choose Ava Medical

  • Doctor-only focus. We place doctors exclusively into permanent NHS and UK independent-sector posts — no locum churn, no commodity treatment.
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology expertise. We understand the difference between a labour-ward-heavy post, a predominantly gynaecology job plan and a sub-specialty role — and match on on-call intensity and surgical mix.
  • CESR & IMG support. Overseas-trained doctors and those building a CESR portfolio get dedicated guidance on GMC application, evidence mapping and interview prep.
  • Access to unadvertised roles. Many trusts approach us before posting externally — your CV reaches clinical directors ahead of the public field.
  • Honest, senior-led advice. Jack Mann, Ava Medical's Managing Partner, brings more than ten years in NHS recruitment and thousands of doctors placed.
  • Completely free for candidates. CV review, interview prep and contract support cost you nothing — all fees are paid by the hiring trust.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology recruitment FAQ

Full GMC registration with a licence to practise and entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics & Gynaecology — via CCT after the RCOG programme and MRCOG, or via CESR for doctors trained outside a UK programme.
Yes. Many trusts offer job plans weighted towards gynaecology or ambulatory care, and some consultant posts are off the labour-ward rota. Tell us your preferences and we'll match the on-call commitment and case mix.
Yes. The CESR route lets doctors trained outside a UK programme evidence equivalence to the CCT standard against the O&G curriculum. Ava Medical supports portfolio building, GMC application and interview preparation.
Yes. SAS and specialty doctor posts are common in O&G, supporting labour ward, theatre, clinics and scanning. The 2021 SAS contract improved pay and career structure for these substantive roles.
