Overview
We are supporting the appointment of a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join a large, well-established and academically active respiratory service within the NHS. This is a substantive consultant role within a dynamic department offering extensive subspecialty services, strong multidisciplinary support, and close links with academic and research partners.
The service delivers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient respiratory care and provides opportunities for consultants to develop subspecialty interests aligned with departmental strengths. Subspecialty expertise of particular interest includes sleep and ventilation, interstitial lung disease, asthma, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, pleural disease, pulmonary vascular disease, and lung cancer, although applications across the full spectrum of respiratory medicine are welcomed.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
• Deliver consultant-level care across inpatient and outpatient respiratory medicine
• Participate in consultant-led inpatient ward rounds and respiratory triage
• Provide outpatient clinics including general and subspecialty respiratory clinics
• Undertake bronchoscopy, pleural procedures, and related interventional activity in line with experience
• Contribute to the consultant respiratory on-call rota
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings including lung cancer, ILD, TB, pleural, and radiology MDTs
• Support delivery of acute and chronic respiratory services in line with national standards
Subspecialty and Service Development
• Develop and maintain a defined respiratory subspecialty interest
• Contribute to specialist services such as sleep and ventilation, ILD, asthma, pleural disease, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, or lung cancer
• Support innovative service models including virtual ward pathways and community integration
• Engage with service improvement, pathway redesign, and quality initiatives
Leadership, Governance, and Professional Responsibilities
• Active participation in clinical governance, audit, guideline development, and risk management
• Contribution to departmental management, service planning, and consultant committees
• Compliance with appraisal, revalidation, CPD, and mandatory training requirements
• Demonstration of inclusive, professional behaviours aligned with NHS values
Teaching, Training, and Research
• Teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
• Clinical and educational supervision of junior doctors
• Participation in regional training programmes
• Opportunities to engage in clinical research, audit, and academic collaboration
• Support for attendance at conferences and professional development activity
Job Plan
• Standard full-time job plan based on 10 Programmed Activities
• Indicative split of approximately 8.5 Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities
• Shared inpatient ward responsibilities on a rotational basis
• Balance of outpatient clinics, inpatient care, MDTs, procedures, and SPA activity
• Flexible and less-than-full-time working considered
• Job plan agreed on appointment and reviewed annually
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine, or eligibility within 6 months via CCT or CESR
• Training and experience equivalent to UK CCT standards
• Broad experience across respiratory medicine
• Ability to work independently at consultant level
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Commitment to patient safety, governance, and service improvement
Desirable Attributes
• Subspecialty expertise in areas such as sleep and ventilation, ILD, asthma, TB, CF, pleural disease, pulmonary vascular disease, or lung cancer
• Bronchoscopy and pleural procedure experience
• Research, teaching, or leadership experience
• Higher academic qualification
