Consultant in General Anaesthesia Substantive Consultant Appointment Full Time or Part Time Considered Overview We are supporting the appointment of a Consultant Anaesthetist to join a large, high-volume anaesthesia, critical care and peri-operative service within the NHS. This is a substantive consultant role offering exposure to a broad range of complex elective and emergency surgical activity, supported by a well-established consultant body and extensive subspecialty expertise. The department provides anaesthetic services across major surgical specialties including trauma, orthopaedics, vascular, thoracic, upper gastrointestinal, colorectal, urology, gynaecological oncology, paediatrics, obstetrics, interventional radiology, and emergency surgery. Consultants are encouraged to develop and maintain subspecialty interests alongside a strong general anaesthetic practice. Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties • Deliver consultant-level general anaesthesia for adult patients across a wide range of surgical specialties • Provide anaesthetic care for elective, emergency, and trauma surgery in line with experience and competencies • Participate in peri-operative assessment and optimisation of high-risk surgical patients • Contribute to emergency anaesthesia and general on-call rotas • Support delivery of anaesthesia for remote sites including interventional radiology and specialist procedural areas • Work closely with critical care teams in the management of complex peri-operative patients Trauma, Emergency, and Complex Surgery • Provide anaesthetic input to a high-volume trauma and emergency surgical service • Participate in consultant-led trauma theatre activity and multidisciplinary trauma meetings • Support major trauma pathways including orthopaedic, abdominal, thoracic, and vascular trauma • Utilise ultrasound and advanced airway skills where appropriate Service Development, Governance, and Professional Responsibilities • Active participation in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement programmes • Contribution to development of clinical pathways, peri-operative medicine, and enhanced recovery programmes • Engagement with service redesign initiatives to support elective recovery and emergency care delivery • Compliance with appraisal, revalidation, CPD, and mandatory training requirements Teaching, Training, and Research • Teaching and supervision of anaesthetic trainees, fellows, and junior doctors • Acting as Clinical and or Educational Supervisor as appropriate • Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education • Opportunities to engage in research, audit, and innovation activity, including regional and national studies Job Plan • Standard full-time job plan based on 10 Programmed Activities • Typical allocation of approximately 8.5 Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities • Participation in general emergency on-call rota • Flexibility to support development of subspecialty interests over time • Flexible and less-than-full-time working considered • Job plan agreed on appointment and reviewed annually Person Specification Essential Requirements • Full GMC registration with licence to practise • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia, or eligibility within 6 months via CCT or CESR • FRCA or equivalent qualification • Training and experience equivalent to UK CCT standards • Ability to deliver independent consultant-level anaesthetic care • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams • Commitment to patient safety, governance, and continuous improvement Desirable Attributes • Interest or experience in trauma, major general anaesthesia, peri-operative medicine, or complex surgery • Post-CCT experience • Teaching, audit, research, or leadership experience • Higher academic or educational qualification Why Apply • Substantive consultant role within a large, highly developed anaesthesia service • Exposure to complex elective, emergency, and trauma surgery • Strong culture of education, research, and subspecialty development • Supportive consultant body and multidisciplinary environment • Flexible working arrangements available Application Process This vacancy is being managed confidentially by Ava Medical.
