Consultant Histopathologist Substantive Consultant Appointment Full Time or Part Time Considered Overview We are supporting the appointment of a Consultant Histopathologist to join a large, well-established cellular pathology service within the NHS. This is a substantive consultant role within an oligo-specialist department, encouraging consultants to participate in two to three subspecialty areas while maintaining flexibility to develop individual professional interests. The service operates within a modern, purpose-built laboratory environment and supports flexible working through digital pathology, structured workload management, and strong administrative and technical support. The department has a strong focus on teaching, research, and service development and offers an inclusive and supportive consultant culture. Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties • Deliver high-quality consultant-level histopathology reporting across agreed subspecialty areas • Participate in routine and complex surgical pathology reporting • Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings across relevant cancer and specialty pathways • Support timely, accurate diagnostic reporting in line with national standards • Participate in workload management systems aligned with Royal College of Pathologists guidance • Contribution to autopsy services is advantageous but not essential Subspecialty Practice • Develop and maintain subspecialty interests aligned with service needs • Particular interest welcomed in paediatric and perinatal pathology, dermatopathology, and gastrointestinal pathology, although other subspecialties can be accommodated • Opportunity to undertake further subspecialty training where required Service Development, Governance, and Professional Responsibilities • Active participation in clinical governance, audit, external quality assurance, and risk management • Contribution to service improvement initiatives and pathway development • Engagement with digital pathology, lean laboratory processes, and innovation projects • Compliance with appraisal, revalidation, CPD, and professional standards • Contribution to departmental management discussions and strategic planning Teaching, Training, and Research • Teaching and supervision of histopathology trainees and junior medical staff • Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate education • Participation in regional training programmes and examination activity • Opportunities to engage in research and collaborative projects through established academic links Job Plan • Standard full-time job plan based on 10 Programmed Activities • Indicative split of approximately 8.5 Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities • Additional SPA allocation may be available for formal teaching, audit, or research activity • No routine on-call commitments • Flexible and less-than-full-time working actively supported • Job plan agreed on appointment and reviewed annually Person Specification Essential Requirements • Full GMC registration with licence to practise • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Histopathology, or eligibility within 6 months via CCT or CESR • FRCPath (or equivalent) • Training and experience equivalent to UK CCT standards • Ability to work independently at consultant level • Strong communication skills and ability to work within multidisciplinary teams • Commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement, and patient safety Desirable Attributes • Experience or interest in paediatric and perinatal pathology, dermatopathology, or gastrointestinal pathology • Experience in service development or leadership activity • Teaching or research experience • Interest in digital pathology and innovation Why Apply • Substantive consultant role within a large, supportive histopathology department • Modern laboratory facilities with digital pathology infrastructure • Strong trainee, technical, and administrative support • Opportunities for teaching, research, and subspecialty development • Flexible working and positive work-life balance culture Application Process This vacancy is being managed confidentially by Ava Medical.
