Consultant in Acute Medicine Acute Medical Unit Substantive Consultant Appointment Full Time or Part Time Considered Overview We are supporting the appointment of a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a large, high-volume Acute Medical Unit within the NHS. This is a substantive consultant role within a busy front-door acute service delivering consultant-led assessment, diagnosis, and management of acutely unwell adult medical patients. The service provides comprehensive acute medical care across the Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care, short stay wards, Emergency Department in-reach, and frailty pathways. The department has a strong focus on multidisciplinary working, early senior decision-making, service innovation, and education. Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties • Deliver consultant-level care for acutely unwell medical patients across the Acute Medical Unit • Lead early assessment, investigation, diagnosis, and management of emergency medical admissions • Participate in Acute Medical Unit ward rounds, short stay ward activity, and Same Day Emergency Care • Provide senior clinical decision-making within Emergency Department in-reach services • Contribute to ambulatory emergency care and Same Day Emergency Care pathways • Participate in the Acute Medicine consultant rota, including evenings and weekends as job planned • Support frailty and older persons pathways in collaboration with specialist teams • Work closely with General Internal Medicine and specialty teams to ensure timely triage and onward care Service Development and Multidisciplinary Working • Actively contribute to the development and improvement of acute medical services • Support new models of care including ambulatory pathways and short stay medicine • Work collaboratively with nursing, advanced care practitioners, therapists, pharmacy, and administrative teams • Engage with system partners to support integrated acute care delivery • Promote patient flow, safety, and quality improvement initiatives Leadership, Governance, and Professional Responsibilities • Active participation in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and risk management • Contribution to departmental meetings and service planning • Participation in appraisal, job planning, revalidation, and continuing professional development • Demonstration of professional behaviours aligned with NHS values and inclusive practice • Contribution to consultant leadership within the Acute Medicine service Teaching, Training, and Education • Teaching and supervision of junior doctors, trainees, advanced care practitioners, and physician associates • Acting as Clinical and or Educational Supervisor as appropriate • Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education • Participation in protected teaching programmes and regional training activity • Opportunities to develop formal educational, leadership, or research roles Job Plan • Standard full-time job plan based on 10 Programmed Activities • Indicative split of approximately 8.5 Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities • Shift-based working across daytime and evening periods • Participation in weekend rotas as job planned • No routine overnight on-call commitments • Flexible and less-than-full-time working supported • Job plan agreed on appointment and reviewed annually Person Specification Essential Requirements • Full GMC registration with licence to practise • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Acute Medicine, General Internal Medicine, or a related medical specialty, or eligibility within 6 months via CCT or CESR • MRCP (or equivalent) • Training and experience equivalent to UK CCT standards • Significant experience in Acute Medicine within the NHS or equivalent healthcare system • Ability to work independently at consultant level • Strong leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary teamworking skills • Commitment to patient safety, service development, and education Desirable Attributes • Experience in Same Day Emergency Care or ambulatory medicine • Interest in frailty, diabetes and endocrinology, medical education, leadership, or research • ALS certification • Teaching, audit, or quality improvement experience Why Apply • Substantive consultant role within a large, high-volume Acute Medical Unit • Consultant-led front-door acute medicine model • Strong multidisciplinary and advanced practice support • Opportunities for service development, leadership, and education • Flexible working patterns and supportive consultant culture Application Process This vacancy is being managed confidentially by Ava Medical.
