Consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Subspecialty Interest in Head and Neck Surgery Substantive Consultant Appointment Full Time or Part Time Considered Overview We are supporting the appointment of a Consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with a subspecialty interest in Head and Neck surgery to join a large, well-established regional plastic surgery service within the NHS. This is a substantive consultant role within a high-volume tertiary referral department delivering complex excisional and reconstructive surgery, supported by a highly developed multidisciplinary team. The department provides comprehensive elective and emergency plastic surgery services and has particular strengths in head and neck oncology, skin cancer, microsurgical reconstruction, trauma, hand surgery, breast reconstruction, and paediatric plastic surgery. The post holder will contribute primarily to head and neck excision and reconstruction while participating in the general plastic surgery on-call rota. Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties • Deliver consultant-level plastic and reconstructive surgery with a focus on head and neck excisional and reconstructive procedures • Participate in multidisciplinary head and neck cancer MDTs and joint clinics • Undertake elective and emergency theatre activity, including microsurgical reconstruction • Provide inpatient and outpatient care across head and neck and general plastic surgery pathways • Contribute to the general plastic surgery on-call rota, including trauma and emergency work • Work collaboratively with ENT, OMFS, oncology, radiology, pathology, and allied health professionals • Maintain high standards of patient safety and care in line with national guidance Head and Neck and Specialist Practice • Deliver complex oncological excision and reconstruction of head and neck malignancies • Contribute to free flap reconstruction and advanced microsurgical practice • Opportunity to strengthen links between head and neck and skin cancer services • Access to advanced technologies including CAD-CAM planning and sentinel node services Service Development, Governance, and Professional Responsibilities • Active participation in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and risk management • Contribution to service development, pathway redesign, and innovation initiatives • Engagement in departmental planning, consultant meetings, and leadership activities • Compliance with appraisal, revalidation, CPD, and mandatory training requirements • Acting as a professional role model and promoting inclusive clinical practice Teaching, Training, and Research • Teaching and supervision of trainees, fellows, and junior doctors • Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate education • Participation in regional and national training programmes • Opportunities to engage in research and clinical trials through established academic partnerships • Support for development of academic and educational interests Job Plan • Standard full-time job plan based on 10 Programmed Activities • Indicative split of approximately 8.5 Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities • Balance of theatre sessions, clinics, MDTs, ward rounds, and SPA activity • Participation in a consultant on-call rota using a structured hot-week model • Flexible and less-than-full-time working considered • Job plan agreed on appointment and reviewed annually Person Specification Essential Requirements • Full GMC registration with licence to practise • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery, or eligibility within 6 months via CCT or CESR • Training and experience equivalent to UK CCT standards • Demonstrated expertise in head and neck reconstructive surgery • Experience in complex microsurgical reconstruction • Ability to work independently at consultant level • Strong communication skills and ability to work within multidisciplinary teams • Commitment to clinical governance, equality, diversity, and patient safety Desirable Attributes • Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in head and neck surgery • Experience in skin cancer surgery or sentinel lymph node biopsy • Research activity or publications related to subspecialty interest • Teaching, leadership, or service development experience Why Apply • Substantive consultant role within a large regional plastic surgery service • High-volume head and neck oncology and reconstruction practice • Strong multidisciplinary and academic support • Access to advanced reconstructive techniques and technology • Supportive consultant culture with flexible working options Application Process This vacancy is being managed confidentially by Ava Medical.
