Substantive Consultant Appointment

Overview
We are supporting the appointment of a Consultant Anaesthetist with a specialist interest in Pain Medicine to join a large, well-established anaesthesia, critical care and pain management service within the NHS. This substantive consultant role combines regular anaesthetic sessions with dedicated pain medicine activity and participation in a general on-call rota.
The department supports a high-volume surgical service across a broad range of specialties, alongside a busy and well-developed chronic and acute pain service with strong multidisciplinary input. The role offers excellent opportunities for professional development, teaching, research, and service improvement within a supportive consultant body.
Key Responsibilities
Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine Duties
• Deliver consultant-level anaesthesia for adult patients across a wide range of surgical specialties, in line with training and experience
• Undertake regular pain medicine sessions within a multidisciplinary pain service
• Provide outpatient pain clinics, multidisciplinary clinics, and interventional pain lists
• Participate in acute pain services alongside specialist nursing teams
• Contribute to theatre-based pain intervention procedures, including fluoroscopy-guided techniques
• Participate in the consultant on-call rota for anaesthesia
• Support peri-operative care for complex and high-risk surgical patients
Multidisciplinary and Service Working
• Work closely with pain nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and other allied health professionals
• Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, case discussions, and pathway development
• Collaborate with surgical, medical, and critical care colleagues to support integrated patient care
• Engage with tertiary services and regional networks as required
Leadership, Governance, and Professional Responsibilities
• Active participation in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
• Contribution to development and implementation of clinical guidelines and pathways
• Compliance with appraisal, revalidation, mandatory training, and professional standards
• Participation in departmental and organisational committees as appropriate
Teaching, Training, and Research
• Teaching and supervision of trainees, fellows, and junior doctors
• Acting as Clinical and or Educational Supervisor where appropriate
• Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
• Engagement with research, audit, and innovation activity within anaesthesia and pain medicine
Job Plan
• Standard full-time job plan based on 10 Programmed Activities
• Typical allocation of Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities agreed at job planning
• Regular anaesthetic sessions, pain clinics, MDT activity, and interventional pain lists
• Participation in general on-call commitments
• Flexible and less-than-full-time working considered
• Job plan agreed on appointment and reviewed annually
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia, or eligibility within 6 months via CCT or CESR
• FRCA or equivalent qualification
• Appropriate training and experience in Pain Medicine
• Ability to work independently at consultant level across anaesthesia and pain medicine
• Strong commitment to multidisciplinary working, governance, and patient safety
Desirable Attributes
• Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine or equivalent
• Post-CCT experience in major general anaesthesia
• Higher academic qualification or formal training in education or research
• Teaching, audit, or leadership experience
